Matthew Quick - You are either with us or against us
Some nine days after the September 11 attacks, President George Bush infamously pronounced: “Either you are with us, or you are with
the terrorists.”
There have been many interpretations of this statement, although few would be surprised to know its’ biblical source: Matthew 12:30
“He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad”. But where Matthew 12:31 goes on to talk of forgiveness, Bush made no such overtures. Further complicating the issue is that although this statement denies neutrality or alternative opinion, it demands global allegiance to a
particular brand of ideology that was never actually defined. Is it requiring compliance to the US spiritual, political or financial hegemony?
Or all three? This metaphorical painting is a response to the absurdity of reducing such complicated issues to such simplistic absolutes.A symbol of wealth, power and status, the velvet rope divides the “opposing forces.” Yet its only strength is attributed power: as a barrier it
offers no actual resistance. More united than divided, the participants are simply sharing the same field.

Robert Brostowski - Frustration
"Bullying is the height of ignorance. It destroys self esteem and creativity .It needs to be stopped in schools and work places. Education supervision should be a tool in helping to stop this .The picture (frustration) is my conception of the product of bullying. I too was a subject of being bullied for many years, too ashamed to tell anyone. I am 63 years old and there are times when I am still affected."
Emma Nostrom - Bullying
This picture is my anti-bullying artwork. I did a lot of researched, used my own experiences as well as observations to allow this piece to reach it's full potential. The bullies and by standers are created by words and the victim is not the reason for this is, I wanted to focus more on the bullies and why they do what they do, as well as the people standing by watching and doing nothing. The victim is nothing but a "victim", they do not cause their own situation, the bullies and the people who stand-by are the cause of bullying.
Sarah Lade - Bullying Hurts; student number: S0211715
My art piece is titled “Bullying hurts”. I was inspired to create this art piece after realising that children are not the only victims of bullying. Bullying is a vicious cycle that occurs at all ages, whether it is at school, work or at home.
The creating process of this art piece firstly included sketching the ladies face, using sharp angles to represent the anger and hurt in her life. Once sketched, I then used blue, black, and red watercolour paints to add some colour.
I chose to use blue watercolour paint on her cheekbones to represent bruising. The bruising from being bullied both physically and emotionally, as you do not need to be just physically hurt to feel pain. Next I used black watercolour paint as an outline of the women’s face, as well as under the women’s eyes. I placed a large amount of black underneath her eyes to emphasise the pain she is feeling and the loss of sleep over the hurt others are causing her. I then used red to colour her lips and to drip drops of paint around her mouth to represent blood. I have placed the drops of red paint near her mouth to represent the physical pain when getting bullied as well as the emotional pain that can be created from words.
The newspaper clippings were added to the art piece to show the emotions the victim may feel when being bullied. Some of these words include hurt, sorrow and angry. I also added newspaper print behind the lady in the foreground to represent people talking behind her back, as the print is in the background.

Brydie Chataway - The power of words - The final battle; Student number S0194755
I have always had a way with words. When I was younger I spent my days writing stories, as I got older I wrote music and poetry. I loved the way that the words could shape emotions and depict passion. For years my passion for words developed as did my understanding of their power.
For this piece I chose to have no detail except for the night sky in the back ground of the painting. This was in attempt to depict a secluded and deserted surrounding area. The sky was painted in blues, purples, browns and blacks; I wanted to use these colours to display her mood and portray the ‘bruised’ emotions young girl the the young girl was feeling.
The colour scheme of the painting was painted dull to represent the energy and despair of the young girl. However to create contrast; the girls pink dress, bright orange hair and the green grass of the cliff were painted bright colours. The young girl in my painting is dressed in a floral pink dress to resemble her innocence She is laying on the soft green grass of a cliff, I painted the grass of the cliff a bright beautiful green to symbolise it’s safety.
Below the cliff, I have painted the back ground black, the black is painted darker as it gets further from the cliff and closer to the bottom of the page. This is to symbolise the unknown depth and inhabbitance of the darkness below, to which the young girl will fall if she lets the word’s win the battle.
The tree is the feature piece of my art work, it has been created using vile language and cruel insults. The branches of the tree are symbolically wrapped around the young girls wrists as the ‘words’ pull her closer and closer off the edge of the cliff.
I wanted to represent how words can have a long lasting affect even after they are spoken. I wanted to represent the power of words – not only the people who speak them.

Jazmin Negro - Suffer in Silence
"When I was little I suffered from bullying at school. It was horrible. I ended up with several scratches on my neck. My work is a reminder that the darkness is in ourselves ... but also light. It shows how we lock ourselves in our grief, although the world keeps turning. The world is beautiful and terrible at the same time, and we cannot help it. But we can always ... get up and keep walking, that's why we have legs."
Alexis - You don't know what goes on behind your back
"Here is a cartoon about gossip/rumors/bullying/teasing. The boy in the picture has words on his back because they are words that people are saying behind his back. When he sees these words, he is hurt. Talking behind someone's back is a horrible thing to do. Everyone has been a victim and everyone has been the person saying these things to a victim.
When I was growing up, I was picked on for being weird. Someone asked me if I had ADD because of the way I was acted as a kid. I didn't let that get me down! People bully all the time. There are many reasons why they do it and unfortunately there's nothing we can do about it."
